Mazeppa s.139 no.4Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886)811:18

Flinch Kemp, Piano
Liszt's Mazeppa is based upon a poem by Victor Hugo which was published in 1829 as a part of a collection Les Orientales. Hugo's poem is included in Liszt's original manuscript. Hugo's poem introduces Mazeppa as a Ukrainian nobleman who became a page at the court of John Casimir, King of Poland. Due to a love affair with the wife of a Podolian count, Mazeppa was punished and tied naked onto a wild horse that was violently heading toward Ukraine. The horse collapsed in death and Mazeppa was saved by Ukrainian Cossacks who then named him as their leader.

Piano Sonata no. 2Grazyna Bacewicz (1909 - 1969)2512:26
        I. Maestoso. Agitato II. Largo III. Vivo (Toccata)
Samuel Hill, Piano
You wouldn't know Bacewicz was a violinist to look at the score of this work! Her piano writing is idiomatic and engaging, and it's a blast to play. This sonata is particularly interesting in the way it regularly and abruptly changes direction, with vast contrasts in tempo, dymanics, and texture; all while retaining a cohesive overall structure.

Regard de l\'Esprit de Joie (Vignt Regards no. X)Olivier Messiaen (1908 - 1992)

Samuel Hill, Piano
"Vehement dance, drunken horn-like tonalities, transport of the Holy Spirit… the joy of God’s love in the soul of Jesus Christ. — I have always been struck by the fact that God is happy — and that His continual and ineffable joy inhabited the soul of Christ. Joy is, for me, a transport, an intoxication in the maddest sense." (Messiaen, Trans. Vannier)
