Liszt’s Benediction of God in Solitude was composed in 1847 and was compiled into a cycle of piano pieces entitled Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, referencing a collection of poems with the same name by Alphonse de Lamartine. The year 1847 was significant point in Liszt’s life, as it was the year when the world renowned virtuoso set down his prolific concert career and turned to composition. It was also during this time that Liszt rekindled the practice of his strong Catholic belief.
