Violin Sonata No. 7 in C minor, Op. 30 No.2 | Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) | 11 | 11:49 |
I. Allegro con brio III. Scherzo: Allegro
Shanmei Zeng, Violin | |||
Rhodri Clarke, piano | |||
This sonata is one of the grandest in the violinist’s repertory. It is a work of drama, passion, power and almost symphonic scope. The first movement opens with a darkly mysterious, almost menacing subject divided into several epigrammatic components, a subject eminently suitable for development later on. The strongly contrasting second subject in E-flat major, march like yet playful, is introduced by the violin. The scherzo movement truly lives up to its title (“joke”) – witty, playful, full of rhythmic quirks and rough humour.

Estampes No.3 Jardins sous la pluie | Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918)
Qihan Sun, Piano | |||
Jardins sous la pluie describes a garden in the Normandy town of Orbec during an extremely violent rainstorm. Throughout the piece, there are sections that evoke the sounds of the wind blowing, a thunderstorm raging, and raindrops dropping. It makes use of two folk melodies, the lullaby Dodo, l'enfant do [fr] and Nous n'irons plus au bois [fr] parce qu'il fait un temps insupportable (We will no longer go to the woods because the weather is unbearable). Chromatic, whole tone, major and minor scales are used in this movement.

Images (Reflets dans l\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'eau) | Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) | 11 | 12:25 |
Zack Lambie , Piano | |||
Claude Debussy's Reflets dans l'eau ("Reflections in the Water") is the first of three piano pieces from his first volume of Images, which are frequently performed separately. It was written in 1905. As with much of Debussy's work, it is referred to as Impressionistic, meaning that it expresses emotions and senses by making use of non-functional harmony and ambiguous key signatures, its tonality being mainly non-diatonic and usually having a sense of modality. It has similarities to Ravel's earlier piece Jeux d'eau. While in some ways Debussy influenced his younger contemporary, Ravel was arguably the first to adopt impressionism
Prelude Op 32 No 10 in B minor | Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943)
Zack Lambie , Piano | |||
Prelude in B minor, Op. 32, No. 10, was written in 1910 along with the other twelve pieces. Rachmaninoff was inspired by Arnold Böcklin's painting "Die Heimkehr" ("The Homecoming" or "The Return"). Rachmaninoff also stated to pianist Benno Moiseiwitsch that this was his personal favourite among his preludes. This is the second work of Rachmaninoff's to be inspired by one of Böcklin's paintings; the other being Isle of the Dead.
