L\'Isle Joyeuse | Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) | 15 | 11:25 |

Written in 1904, L’Isle Joyeuse was based on Jean-Antoine Watteau’s painting and depiction of Cythera. It is an island where Aphrodite was born, and it would have been a destination for lovers everywhere. The painting illustrates a beautiful landscape, beautiful figures in beautiful clothes, and cupids floating about. It is a classical scene with mythological overtones. The main theme and harmonic material are based on a careful dichotomy of the whole-tone scale and the diatonic scale which is ultimately tied together with the Lydian mode. The Lydian mode is also what gives the piece a unique, mysterious atmosphere. | |||
