| The concerto was Ginastera's first composition for piano since his Piano Sonata No. 1, Op. 22, written in 1952. The work was commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation and was completed in 1961. It is dedicated to the memory of Serge and Natalie Koussevitzky. | |

| Written in 1904, L’Isle Joyeuse was based on Jean-Antoine Watteau’s painting and depiction of Cythera. It is an island where Aphrodite was born, and it would have been a destination for lovers everywhere. The painting illustrates a beautiful landscape, beautiful figures in beautiful clothes, and cupids floating about. It is a classical scene with mythological overtones. The main theme and harmonic material are based on a careful dichotomy of the whole-tone scale and the diatonic scale which is ultimately tied together with the Lydian mode. The Lydian mode is also what gives the piece a unique, mysterious atmosphere. | |
