Devina Christi, piano | |||
Also known as “The Trumpet Sonata†or “The Hunt Sonata†, due to the horn-like opening, is Mozart’s last piano sonata. It was one of the “6 easy piano sonatas†that he composed for Princess Friederika. In fact, it is Mozart’s most technical demanding sonata, particularly due to the contrapuntal.
Scherzo No.1 in B minor, Op. 20 | Frédéric Chopin (1810 - 1849)
Devina Christi, piano | |||
Literally means joke, the first Scherzo of his four Scherzi work, was composed in 1830 during the Warsaw outbreak. He was in Vienna and unable to return home during Christmas. It is written in ABA form, starting in B minor, fast and agitated, representing his dark humour, despair, uncertainty of his future due to the outbreak. Interestingly, the middle part is very contrasting, modulating to B major, with slow, lyrical, and melodic passage. It has the melody of Polish Christmas carol Lulajże Jezuniu, “Sleep, little Jesusâ€, conveying his homesickness. This piece represents his characteristics of melody, figuration, and harmony.
