It is written in ABA form, starting in B minor, fast and agitated, representing his dark humour, despair, uncertainty of his future due to the outbreak. Interestingly, the middle part is very contrasting, modulating to B major, with slow, lyrical, and melodic passage. It has the melody of Polish Christmas carol Lulajże Jezuniu, “Sleep, little Jesusâ€, conveying his homesickness. This piece represents his characteristics of melody, figuration, and harmony.
Estampes | Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918)
3. Jardins sous la Pluie
Devina Christi Soeryawinata, piano
Meaning Gardens in the Rain, last work from his collection “Estampesâ€, which was written as his admiration to visual arts. This piece portrays children playing in the garden but then the thunderstorm comes. It starts with rain in the beginning, with a wind blowing in the middle, and finally the sun and rainbow come up in the end. The melody of French folk songs was also conveyed in this piece, “Nous n'irons plus aux boisâ€, which about a mother asking the children to stop playing in the woods, and "Dodo, l'enfant do", a French lullaby. Chromatics, major, minor, and whole tone scales were used in this piece, which shows Debussy’s musical style
