Ballade in F minor Op. 52Frederic Chopin (1810 - 1849)

Tim Kan, Piano
Written in 1842, this ballade is commonly considered one of Chopin's masterpieces, and one of the masterpieces of 19th-century piano music. The Chopin ballades hold significance in the history of piano repertoire as Chopin was the first to experiment with the Ballade form. His ballades turned out to be so popular and successful that other composers such as Liszt and Brahms also produced Ballade works. The ballade form, although somewhat resembles parts of sonata form, is characterized by its narrative and story-telling nature.

Trio Apparition, S.155Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886)
        No.1
Katniss Li, Piano
Liszt took inspiration from Alphonse de Lamartine’s poem Apparitions, and used melody to convey this poem. He composed this while he was only 22 years young, living in France. It gives off the impressionistic elements that we later find in Debussy, but note this is composed by early Liszt. Apparitions alternate moments of sounds and moments of silence. The usual use of harmonies, constant tritone and chromatic changes mark these trio apparitions the unique pieces of Liszt.
