Composed for piano duet,'L'Aideronnette, Imperatrice des Pagodes' and'Les Entretiens de la Belle et la Bête' are two of five movements from his suite 'Ma Mère L'Oye (Mother Goose Suite, 1908 - 1910). Each movement inspired by fairytales, Ravel composed this suite for Mimie and Jean Godebski, the children of his friends. He also wrote an orchestral and ballet version in 1911. 'L'Aideronnette, Imperatrice des Pagodes' evokes a watery scene from the story of the green serpent and a princess. 'Les Entretiens de la Belle et la Bête' portrays the Beauty and the Beast through contrasting musical figures.

Cello sonata | George Crumb (1929 - 2022) | 3 | 12:02 |
3rd movement - Toccata | |||
Ceridwen, Cello | |||
This cello sonata was written in 1955 when crumb was 25 years old. Being a student at the time, this was his first published work. The sonata’s three movement are based on Baroque forms exemplifying the neoclassicism that was so popular in the 1900s. The third movement is a free toccata that takes us on a wild ride pulling us forward with its fast staccato movement, then forcing us to sway with its lilting middle section before escorting us swiftly towards the end again.

I. Allegro Cantabile II. Aria
Jessica Zuk, Flute | |||
Rhodri Clarke, piano | |||
Otar Taktakishvili was a Georgian composer who lived under the Soviet regime. Although his Sonata for Flute and Piano is a staple of the modern flute repertoire, his works are otherwise rarely performed in the West. In his native land, by contrast, Taktakishvili enjoyed extensive political and artistic recognition. His compositional style was melodically driven and strongly influenced by folk music of Georgia and the Caucasus, of which the Sonata is a pertinent example.
