The Hollow Men | Vincent Persichetti (1915 - 1987) |

The Hollow Men was inspired and based on the poem of the same name written by American poet T.S. Elliot and published in 1925. The poem describes a post-war world populated by empty, defeated people lacking spiritual fulfilment and leading futile lives.
Persichetti’s composition depicts the emptiness of those returning from the horrors of war through a lack of tonal centre in the music, the wide-open intervals and the diverse use of dynamics. This creates a sense of despair, sorrow and desolation as evident in the poem.
