Sonata no. 28, op. 101 in A majorLudwig Van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)
        I. Etwas lebhaft und mit der innigsten Empfindung II. Lebhaft, marschäßig III. Langsam und sehnsuchtvoll IV. Geschwind, doch nicht zu sehr, und mit Entschlossenheit
Anna Gao, Piano
Beethoven's Sonata in A major is regarded as one of his 'late' sonatas. His nationalistic feelings during this period led him to seek German substitutes for traditional Italian musical terminology as seen in the tempo and character markings at the start of each movement.

PreludesClaude Debussy (1862 - 1918)
Book II, no. 6 - General Lavine eccentric, Book I, no. 10, The Engulfed Cathedral
Anna Gao, Piano
Debussy composed his two books of twenty four preludes between 1909-1913. Debussy's 6th prelude of his second book is inspired by the famous American juggler General Lavine. Debussy captures the eccentrics of the performer within the form of the cakewalk. Debussy's 10th prelude, book I, tells a story of the mythical cathedral of Ys, which was said to rise from the waves with bells chiming, priests chanting, and its organ playing before sinking back into the water.

Barcarolle op. 60Fryderyk Chopin (1810 - 1849)

Anna Gao, Piano
Chopin's Barcarolle was written in the summer of 1845, alongside new mazurkas and songs. The barcarolle genre was becoming increasingly popular in vocal and pianistic lyricism.

Sonata in A major K.209(Giuseppe) Domenico Scarlatti (1685 - 1757)
        Single movement sonata
Phuong Duong, Piano
Sonatas K. 208 and K. 209. They are both in the key of A major, with a well-defined two-part structure. Sonata K.208 is slow and lyrical, exploring the use of suspensions. Sonata K. 209 is inspired in the jota aragonesa, a Spanish dance characterized by the triple meter in a fast pace and rapid alternation between chords. This dance was often played on the guitar, which was used as a strummed accompaniment to singers and dancers. Scarlatti uses some devices in this piece such as syncopation which imposes a 3/4 pattern over two measures of 3/8 time and insistent repetitions, some of his style characteristics.
