Francis Poulenc was a French composer and pianist. Born in Paris in 1899 to a wealthy bourgeois family, who ran a pharmaceutical company. He was introduced to the piano at age 5 by his mother. Despite his talent for music, he was not allowed to enter the Conservatoire. Poulenc was mainly self-taught but received some tuition from Ricardo Viñes. This concerto was composed in 1949, as a commission by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In the first premier in 1950, Poulenc himself was the soloist. | |||

The Toccata in E minor is the shortest of the seven ‘manualiter’ toccatas. It is clearly structured in four parts that flow more or less seamlessly into one another. The piece opens with a simple prelude that goes into an elegant double fugue, followed by a free, improvisatory adagio. It ends with another fuge, brilliant this time. | |||
