Franz Schubert's Introduction and Variations on "Trockne Blumen" (Dry Flowers), D802, was composed in January 1824. Like many of his compositions, Schubert took one of his own lieders as a template for an instrumental work. "Trockne Blumen" was the eighteenth lied in his song cycle "Die schöne Müllerin" D795, written in 1823. The set of variations are based around E minor with a large Introduction section prefacing it. |

Op. 37a Autumn Song (from the Seasons) | Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) |
|
Timothy, Piano |
Nikolay Bernad commissioned Tchaikovsky to write 12 short pieces in 1875, one for each month of the year. Each piece has its own unique flavor. For the month of October, slow meandering melodies reflect melancholy and sadness. Perhaps, reflecting the seasonal depression typical to the season of autumn as well and hence, the autumn song. |
